4 convenient ways that Radio Frequency Identification is benefiting higher education

RFID (or radio frequency identification) tags are intelligent bar codes that communicate and track items or people. First, they detect the item through an electronic reader, which then communicates the information back to a central network system.

Student holding an RFID Student card

RFID, originally a tracking technology used for cattle, can now virtually track a multitude of consumer items. For instance, RFID can literally eliminate annoying lineups at the campus bookstore by detecting every book you put in your cart or every textbook rental. After the textbook is tracked, the required information is sent to the publisher, and finally the amount of your total bill is deducted from your bank account for payment. RFID is pretty convenient huh?

  • Well currently, RFID is being used to track almost everything, from:
  • Retail merchandise
  • Vehicles
  • Airline or bus passengers
  • Hospital patients
  • Pets
  • And even student attendance…

RFID has some clear benefits as far as its use in a college environment—benefiting the safety and convenience of students, instructors—and even decreasing theft and loss of college materials, such as textbooks, lab tools and other campus property.

1. RFID in libraries

In the campus library, RFID is used to keep a detailed account of library materials, drastically reducing the library budget. For instance, any book checked out is instantly scanned with no room for human error. So if a book is lost or stolen, the cost of that book is immediately billed to the student who loaned it. RFID can also be used to benefit the campus library in the following ways:

  • To speed up the check-in or check-out of library materials
  • To improve the accuracy of the library catalogue
  • To reduce and deter theft
  • To instantly track lost or overdue books

2. RFID for student ID

Many universities across the U.S., including the University of Chicago and the Northern Arizona University, are using RFID to track students. Each student is issued a smart card that they will keep on their person at all times. The student card contains personal information such as the student’s name, photo, year, school name and the four-digit school ID number. The RFID smartcard also takes care of accurate student and staff attendance.

3. RFID amps up campus security

College departments, like the El Paso Health Sciences Center at Texas Tech University, have integrated RFID in order to up campus security—both for student and for auditing and tracking departmental assets (in this case to track microscopes and other lab tools). Students and professors also require an RFID smart card in order to gain entry into campus buildings, which cuts down the loss or theft of keys to expensive or vital college property, and RFID grants secure access to controlled areas like labs, dorm rooms, or offices.

4. RFID as payment

RFID also enables electronic payment of any item a student needs on campus. The student can load their smart card with money for various items and pay for things like:

  • Cafeteria meal points
  • Vending machine and dining hall snacks and beverages
  • School supplies and textbooks at the campus book store
  • Laundry
  • Hair cuts
  • School swag
  • Tickets to student events

Disney Uses RFID for Refillable Mugs

Will Disney use RFID chips to save money? One of the greatest debates among those looking for Disney deals revolves around refillable mugs at the Walt Disney World Resorts. Disney sells these mugs with the stipulation that you can only use them for the length of your stay. However, many people purchase them once and then bring them back year after year to continue to fill them for free. Disney has tried changing the mug graphics more frequently but visitors continue to use the old mugs.

No matter where visitors stand on the refillable mug debate, Disney is taking a definite stand by employing the use of RFID to limit refills. According to DIS Unplugged, Disney is testing new technology at its All Start Sports Resort. Drink dispensers will only dispense drinks into cups that have the appropriate RFID chips embedded. Single use cups will be timed for meal time and the refillable mugs will be timed for the length of stay at the resort of the purchaser. The technology is provided by ValidFill.

Over the last several years, Disney has been ramping up the use of RFID both in the parks and on their cruise ships. The new Disney Dream ship uses RFID in the room keys to allow visitors to tap a box on their doors to open them. They can also tap their keys when they have their pictures taken by cruise photographers to have them added to their room accounts. At Disneyland, RFID chips are being sewn into Cast Member costumes to allow for quicker changes and inventorying. Rumors continue to circulate about RFID being used in the coming years in the Disney World parks to better customize the visitor experience at attractions and rides.

Whether Disney is using RFID to cut costs, increase behind-the-scenes efficiency, or provide vacationers with a better trip, it apparent that Disney is getting both creative and aggressive with the RFID technology.

Our RFID Database of Articles

I get quite a few emails asking about RFID as you can imagine. More times then most it is from a new employee that is trying to save the new company money so they come out looking like a shining star to their new boss.

Most of the time the employee has just graduated college and was put into a job in the supply chain division and they have no clue as to how to proceed. I feel sorry for them, they didn’t study this in college and now they are placed in an awkward position of learning on the fly.

I usually send them to our RFID Articles page and let them read up a bit. After a few days they come back and ask much better questions about how RFID works and how they can implement it into their new company. I am always glad to help out but the questions I get from the outset are quite funny. I love answering them once they get a quick learning about RFID and how it works. It makes the lessons so much less painful for me.

Explaning RFID Is Not An Easy Task

There is no easy way to explain RFID but this is the easiest way I can think of in easy to understand for the common person that has no clue what RFID is.

RFID technology is used frequently today, but not many people know about, or even know what it is never mind understand it. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and is used to store and retrieve information. This information is stored and retrieved using RFID tags or transponders. These tags are small and can be incorporated into many products. The tags have antennas that allow them to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver.

The RFID industry is currently undergoing speedy growth and orgasmic changes. Market research firms forecast the market for products and services will intensity to the $7 billion range by 2008. With mandates from both distinguished retailers and government entities, many more companies are ready to infuse on the RFID technology journey.

How Does It Work

RFID works off of a system that relies on tags, tag readers, tag programming stations, sorting equipment, circulation readers, and tag inventory wands. RFID is generally used in security, because security gates are programmed to read the RFID tags and then either open or close accordingly. The system helps the information be easily transmitted via an RFID device. Systems have evolved over the years along with Generation 2 chips. The hope is that it will one day be available to everyone (meaning consumers) because it will be more efficient and cost effective to implement RFID processes.

There are two types of RFID tags:

*Passive tags do not have their own power supply, but rather receive their power from a tiny electrical current present in the antenna that is induced by an incoming radio frequency scan. These tags are good for a short distance tracking solution.

*Active RFID tags have a power source and therefore are much stronger and can be used over larger distances and are therefore more highly effective. Active tags also have the ability to store more information than their passive counterparts. Some active tags have a battery life of up to ten years.

Where is RFID Used?

RFID can be found almost everywhere. It can even be found in your local Wal-Mart or other big brand retailers. The little alarm that sounds if an item has not been scanned is made possible by a chip. These chips are also found on car alarms, and even animal tags. One other use of this solution is to track and detect motion. This could be very useful in the coming years in terms of prisons. This technology will be employed in many states in the coming years.

Who knew that this technology was so simple to learn.
