IBM RFID Commercial Was Not What I Was Expecting At All

Last night I am sitting home watching the Monday night football game and a commercial comes on with a couple of guys driving a truck. At first I thought it was one of those Dale Jarret "race the truck" UPS commercials.

Then all of a sudden a help desk pops up in front of the truck and the lady tells the guys that they are lost and they are on the wrong road. When the confused drivers have to ask "how did you know that?" the lady answers that the boxes in the truck told her.

The drivers still appear confused and that when she explains how IBM is using RFID in their asset tracking management. I was half asleep when she mentioned the word RFID but I woke right up. I am sure there are a lot of people that have no idea what she was talking about.

Somewhere there was a guy on his couch scratching his head trying to figure out how the boxes were communicating with this help desk.

I guess when a big company like IBM spends money on a commercial for inventory control management systems RFID is becoming mainstream. I am still in shock that I saw this commercial.

In a way it is nice to see someone investing millions of dollars on a RFID commercial, it saves me from trying to explain what RFID is and how it is used.
